03tFC Lesson 1

Chapter 31

Playtime is over, friends! We've worked with Pete to get him away from his stifling home in the hope of making his family life better (misguided though that notion might be.)
We've gone through the entire Appraisement Cycle ordeal. We even survived an explosion and tsunami! But now the time has come to buckle down and actually become a student at the Ocademy. And that starts with being bonded with an element.
Things didn't go the way Pete would have liked. So once again he has decisions to make. He can accept his fate and either grit his teeth through his tenure at the Ocademy or embrace it. He can petition to switch to another element (which could take ages). Or he can arrange to go home ... once the finitelock on the portals lifts, that is.
So let's see where Pete landed and do our best to muddle through together!

🏫 ACTIVITIES by Category
(choose the activities that are right for you)

1. ⏪ RECAP previous chapter  As you recall ... Pete had just had a shirt slid over his torso with a logo indicating his element
  • 🧠 Because the Academy of Omniosophical Arts & Sciences is a mouthful, what do most people call the school? [either the Ocademy or just Omni]
  • 🧠 Who is Curator Theod? [the school's headmaster]
  • 🧠 What was the name of the person who is the invisible voice in Pete's head? [EsperanΓ§a]

2. πŸŽ RE-ENACT & Act (See Supplies List above for Cosplay props)
  • Have students do a PDQ (pretty darn quick) 1-minute re-enactment of Destiny by Design
  • πŸ¦„πŸ§  Have everyone give themselves fake names then go around introducing themselves to others. Use imaginative ways to remember the names then see who remembered the most
  • Assign the roles of Pete and Kyrian for the credo-recitation scene

3. 🎨 πŸ¦„ IMAGINE, DRAW, MAKE
  • Draw the grotto as described in the text
  • Have the students put together the pineapple fruit boats and coconut ice cream bowls mentioned above in the Experience Enhancers section
  • Make super simple DIY seashell candles

4. πŸ” RESEARCH
  • Use the “detect language” option on Google Translate to look the phrase “TΔ“nā koe”. What language is it and what does it mean? [It's a Maori (New Zealand aboriginal) greeting, used when addressing an individual]
  • 🧠 What is a Caretaker? See the glossary from Destiny by Design if you don’t recall [The Stipe or Preceptor assigned to watch over the residents of an element Frond ie dormitory]
  • What are selkies and naiads?

5. πŸŽ STUDENT TEACHING
  • Have students go over the links and explain the connected content

6. πŸ’¬ πŸ€” DISCUSS & DEDUCE (includes highlight topics from Teachizz edition)
  • Were you surprised Pete was bonded with Aquis? How do you think he will do there? Would you be disappointed if you were he?
  • In your own words, what does the Aquis credo mean?

X XTRAS
  • Dance party as described below in the Meanwhile section...

*indicates a character or activity not specified in the narrative
a perfect way for group members who are either too young or too advanced for the lesson's specific subject matter to get involved
  • Have a *narrator read aloud parts of the story while others re-enact
  • Have members of the group pantomime the opening scene, especially acting like cheering students in the bleachers
  • Have non-students learn their element canticle (theme song) for performance later
  • Have young ones portray fish, mermaids, the whale etc.
  • Have non-students sing for the group like the beluga whales did. Your performers and listeners may enjoy this song. While it doesn't have 4-part harmony, it's fun, it's infectious and there are various parts for performers: the main singer, clappers, those who oooh, and those who yeah. (This makes for a great energy-burning dance party!)
  • Have non-students serve the treats made by the group
  • Have members of the group who are not taking the class as a student participate in the Omnopoly Quiz Game, Ponderlings, and writing prompts for fun
  • *And here's a zentangle jellyfish coloring page (simply because our content creator has a thing for jellies!)
