🗄️ DETAILS by Category

1. ⏪ RECAP previous chapter - As you recall ... Frankie & Finn went to the Captain's Dinner wooohooo! Unfortunately, an admiral was coming on board to stay in the room where the children were staying

2. 🤔 DEDUCE

  • Why should Frankie & Finn split up instead of walking to the Smoking Lounge together?

3. 🔍 RESEARCH

  • What is a "shell game"?
  • Visit YouTube to look up & listen to Beethoven’s Fifth Symphony
  • Visit YouTube to look up & listen to Mozart’s Eine Kleine Nachtmusik
  • Have learners use a translate app to determine what the title of Mozart’s piece means in English

4. 🎭 RE-ENACT
  • The scene when Finn uses the map to take the Robinson kids to the off-limits area of the ship. Suggested supplies: Cart, Ship Map / Blueprint, Moustache & bow tie for Finn, “Off Limits” tape, white sheets to cover furniture
  • You can either use Maggie's Ship Map / Blueprint showing the Smoking Lounge or create your own to let the learners navigate around the house. It might be fun to take the kids along a circuitous route, making a stop somewhere in the house they’re not usually allowed to go so they can break the “off-limits” tape (we suggest crepe paper), then continue winding around to get to your actual destination where sheets cover furniture.
  • 🎁 Consider enhancing the experience by letting the kids spend the night in the Smoking Lounge (i.e. in the room of your choice using the furniture, throw pillows, and cover sheets for slumber)
  • The cruise constable pretending to be a room service waiter then returning as a maid
  • 🧍🏻‍♀️Teach the children how to curtsy. 🍎 Then have them teach others in the family how to do so. You may also want to teach them how to bow

5. 🦄 CREATE

  • Design a watch. (Be sure to cut the pieces out ahead of time for the littles, Glue dots will help them with assembly)
  • Have the learners come up with a knock code of their own. ⚠️ Note of Caution: If you set up a way for the children to “block” the door, make sure you can easily get into the room when you need to. You can still use your code knock and allow them to open the door for you, but you need to maintain ready access at all times

6. 💬 DISCUSS

  • What do you think the Robinson kids would have been doing while waiting for Frankie & Finn?
  • Why is smoking frowned upon in modern times?
  • What does the title of the chapter have to do with what took place during the chapter?

👶 WEE ONES OPTION ⌚️
While the older kids are doing their research, the young ones can Design a Watch

Involve them in the curtsying

🤪 ZOOMIES OPTION 🙃
Last chance to ride on a cart! Perhaps let them help remove sheets and arrange the pillows & chairs

Make sure they get to help 'break the tape' ... more than once, if need be
