Time Stowaways - Lesson 11

Chapter Eleven — A Matter of Metal
THEME: Find a Way Together

⏰ Time: 90 minutes (depending on your activities of choice)
Add 15-30 minutes for Omnopoly Quiz Game & Travelogue Writing Prompt
which can be done at any time after the session

🎁 Experience Enhancers: To add to the urgency of the scene, have the sound of a clock ticking while re-enacting going through the portal.
Have students use the word neato in their regular conversation from now until they finish the story.
Have a Welcome Basket of goodies waiting for the travelers on the other side of the portal. (We can't do a whole wagon, so a basket will have to suffice. Let the group show off what they learned in lesson 1)

🗄️ DETAILS by Category

1. ⏪ RECAP previous chapter - As you recall ... The gang was on their way to a cemetery where they could access a portal to go to the Academy of Omniosophical Arts & Sciences. Frankie, Finn, and the elderly couple all felt confident they would be able to get assistance at the Ocademy that would help them find a way home.

2. 🔍 RESEARCH

  • What does Omnia Ab Uno mean? And what language is it?(Google Translate may have an answer)
  • Who is Nicolas Cage, and what is he known for?
  • Research the term Welcome Wagon. How might this sort of place be set up to welcome people in 2020?
  • What is a scholarship? How does it work and how does a student apply for it?
  • 💡 FYI, “Loopholes” along with an entire system of time travel laws are covered in the 7-novella Omni Tale series Mind the Portal
  • 💡Here’s a quick TidByt about Aethereans

3. 🦄 IMAGINE & DESIGN

  • What would you expect the threshold portion of a portal to look like? What might it look like from the other side?
  • Have the group use its collective creativity to design a portal at home
  • ... If you don't mind us putting in our 2 cents, there is one component we feel is vital to the success of nearly every undertaking—color-changeable, remote-operated LED fairy lights. Battery-operated may work best based on your situation.

4. 👷🏾‍♀️🔨 BUILD A PORTAL

  • Collect the materials needed for the portal, opting for simpler rather than more complex solutions. (Using a doorway would probably work best, as you can attach elements to the door frame)
  • Make sure to give learners a job to do
  • Elect a project foreman (even if the whole work force is just you & your child)
  • We rarely use AI aids (except for when it comes to creating parts of coloring pages), but a portal project sounded like the perfect kind of text prompt for AI to show off what it can do. We posted our AI findings in this lesson's Printables, sans editing
  • Take photos during the process

5. 🎭 RE-ENACT

  • Take photos of learners holding hands and going through the portal — from both sides of the portal
  • 🎁 Have a welcome basket waiting on the other side of the portal. Fill it with goodies such as stickers, treats, stampers, etc
  • Re-enact the “metal” scene. You will need a brooch and a spoon … and a pen that is part metal. You may want a cane if you have someone playing Bardlbus.

6. 💬 DISCUSS

  • Have the students describe how they would transport someone using unconventional or futuristic means
  • Why was Frankie sorrowful?
  • What would you have chosen if you were in their shoes?
  • What do you think was written on the plaque Finn glimpsed part of? Could it have referenced a descendant of his?
  • Why do you think Chuck wept?
  • What is the "matter of metal" referenced in the chapter title?

👶 WEE ONES OPTION 🌈
Let them help with portal design, possibly by coloring in parts of the construction materials or picking colors of decorations

Have them play reporters to interview (and photograph) those in charge of the portal project

🤪 ZOOMIES OPTION 🙃
Give rambunctious rascals portal-project tasks that burn off energy such as fetching things, holding things up, and so on

Note: You'll find AI content in this packet. There are no coloring pages or exercises included on purpose. Artistic expression and problem-solving will best be applied to portal design 🎨👩🏻‍🎨

✍️Travelogue Writing Prompt:
Write about how you would feel if you were the Robinson children, left 50 years in the future without knowing anyone at the school?
