1. ⏪ RECAP previous chapter - As you recall ... the group found out where they landed was half a century in the future!
2. 🤔 DEDUCE
- What sorts of headlines and articles do you think the group would find in a 2020 New Orleans newspaper?
- 🦄 Have the students come up with headlines and articles for a front page of a newspaper
- 📰 Create a rough layout of the newspaper page before the field trip
- Before you take to the road, print out the Printables to take with you, along with your Teachizz™ edition, a treat for the library staff, crayons or markers for colorong pages, and snacks for your brood, just in case
- Have the students use a paper map (even if printed from Google) to determine how to get to the nearest library. Then hit the road!
💐 We here at Omnimmersive Learning (as well as our arts philanthropy, Whimsicalitea) feel strongly about supporting libraries and those who work there. Thus, we ask you consider joining our fun Biblioperatives group to go on occasional library “missions”
- Research what actually would have been going on in New Orleans on February 29, 2020. How would that real news compare to what your students came up with? How would it compare to what might have been reported in 1953?
- Look up the National Advisory Committee for Aeronautics (at Langley) to determine what it was and what it would become just 5 years later (in 1958). They may be delighted to learn it is NASA!
Look up the Main Library located at 219 Loyola Ave, New Orleans, LA 70112. Have students give their thoughts on why Finn and Maggie would think the images of the library’s facade make it look like a prison
Look up & report on H.G. Wells
Look up & report on H.P. Lovecraft
What is/was microfiche?
Based on the Omni Ocademy’s homepage, how would you describe the school? 💡 Here’s a short TidByts video about the Ocademy to give students a tad more info without overwhelming them
What is the name of the eatery they go to? And what route did they take to get there from the library? (See this lesson's Printables)
What is the address of the cemetery they need to visit, and what is the most direct route to get there from where they are? Remember, the group is on foot! … and mobility scooter. (See this lesson's Printables)
Is it true you can only visit the grounds if you’re on a tour? Here’s a website for confirmation
- Head to a sandwich shop where you can dine and conduct the discussion portion of the lesson. Extra points if they serve po' boys!
- For your own sanity, have this eatery selected and the route mapped out prior to beginning this lesson. You may even want to familiarize yourself with the menu before going.
- Why would the sight of the sign over the po' boy restaurant door make Frankie emotional? How does it relate to him? (🔗 skull with crossed bread baguettes and a fleur de lis)
- What is Saliolum? How often does it take place, and why might it be fun to observe?
- What would be a good way to handle situations when other kids are behaving badly like the hoodlums at the library?
- Why is pulling a fire alarm not funny, and why should you never do it
- How would you go about researching time travel? What about if you were students from 1953?
- Who or what is/was Pegasus?
- How would you feel if you were the Robinson children and found out you had no one and nothing to go back to? What would you want to do based on the situation?
- How do you think the elderly couple can help the kids?
- What does the old-school term “off your rocker” mean, both figuratively and technically?
- Where would you like to go, using a portal?
- The old man uses the word “dolcezza” as a term of endearment. Have students use a translation app to determine what language it’s in, what it means, and how to pronounce it. (For the record, it’s Italian for “sweet” and pronounced dohl-chetsuh)
- What’s a portal?
- To what does this chapters title refer?
