🗄️ DETAILS by Category
1. ⏪ RECAP previous chapter - As you recall ... Frankie & Finn saw a signal comprised of flags and they were sure the message was sent by the Robinson kids. Now they have to figure out what the message means!
2. 🤔 DEDUCE
- As a reminder, what did Frankie say about the red & white and blue & yellow diagonal flags?
3. 🔍 📚 RESEARCH
- Look up the word siesta. What is it exactly and how would you spend a siesta on a cruise ship?
- 🎨 Designate a room with a sign that says: Ship Library (see Printables)
- 🎁 For a more authentic experience, print & assemble the short flag booklet (as supplied in the Printables for this chapter).
- Look up the maritime flags & their meaning: one, three, six, six. (For an extra challenge, use the ship diagram to identify the location where the flags were flown.)
- 🎨 Have the students color in the flags that were hung out the window and put them in order (see Printables)
4. 🧮 CALCULATE
- How much time (more or less) do you figure they have between now and when the social worker comes? (This will be for the group to agree on as there is no way of knowing exactly when the social worker will arrive at the laundry room)
5. 💬 DISCUSS
- Would you try to rescue the kids? If so, how?
- What do you think Frankie has in mind?
- And why would they need string?
- What sort of plan do you think Frankie and Finn should come up with to ensure they’re not noticed when trying to rescue the children? What would you do?
- Why did they dress up like showgirls? It's because those are the only people who go down to the laundry late at night. The practice of dressing in opposing-gender clothing has been going on for centuries. Not only is it a classic comedy trope dating back to Shakespeare and Mozart (to name a few), but in Shakespeare's day, women were not allowed to be in theatrical productions, so their roles were played by males. And in the 1920s there was a craze with women dressing as men, moustache and all. The point is, Frankie & Finn's showgirl costumes are included in good fun, as goofy disguises made all the goofier because of the flamboyant nature of the outfits performers wear in musical revues. They represent an opportunity for over-the-top and playful creativity. (A couple of fun cinematic examples of the hiding as the opposite sex are the classic film Some Like It Hot and Tom Hanks' TV show Bosom Buddies)
6. 🎭 RE-ENACT
- The thread-&-key scene with: Spool of thread, Key, Broom, Pile of clean laundry
- Have the children fold the laundry to your specifications while looking for the key. Thereafter, have the group go together to each applicable room or closet to put the laundry away as a group. Note: If you ask them to go to their room only, there is a good chance they will put their own laundry in a pile that never gets put away or even gets knocked over and needs to be refolded. Once they find the key (and have put the laundry away), celebrate with a beverage or treat of some kind.
- Have some fun with the most glamorous of re-enactments as musical revue performers. See suggested supplies list for ideas &/or come up with your own! 🎩🦄 Have fun getting creative with the costumes and accessories
- 🏃🏻♀️ Run from the constables with Frankie & Finn dressed as showgirls, with Finn carrying Maggie, and Frankie toting Betsy. (Substitute dolls & stuffed animals as needed)
