Chapters Twenty—Twenty-Three

The initial shock of the Ocademy may have worn off and the showy “first impression” presentations by the element domains may be over, but there are still a lot of “firsts” in Pete’s present and future. Adventure is all around him, which can be thrilling, but how do you know where to draw the line?

Flying on the back of a mythical creature with other recruits would be exhilarating, and it appears to be safe enough. At least one would think so, or the Bureau (administration) would not allow it. Right? Even finding yourself in the ocean astride a dolphin could be thrilling. But outrunning a tsunami is flat out scary! As is the news a magma mine was blown up in Ignis!

The Bureau has hosted a calming tea party for the recruits to take the place of the remaining estate tours—for reasons of safety. But how safe are the recruits really?

⏰ Time: 65-75 minutes depending on your chosen activities.

Add extra time for a FIELD TRIP WOOOOHOOOOO + any edibles you may serve (pancake breakfast &/or tea with treats)

Give lesson leader additional time before the lesson for food prep

Add 15-30 minutes for Omnopoly Quiz Game, Vocab Quiz, Ponderlings, and Memoir Writing Prompt (which can be done at any time after the session) + as much time as you like for Multigenerational Meanwhile activities

🎁 Experience Enhancers: FIELD TRIP to a tearoom!

If going to a tearoom (or hotel that serves afternoon/high tea) is not in the cards for you, come up with some tea fare at home. Tea is a big deal in most societies, and each culture has its own customs. (We skew British when it comes to tea treats.)

If hot or iced tea is not right for your family or students, feel free to serve whatever beverage you like using a teapot for added ambience. For the ultimate enhancement, before the lesson, serve the pancake "house" breakfast (with banana slices as windows, a strawberry slice for the front door, and a squiggle of whipped cream substituted for smoke coming out of a bacon chimney), and at the end of the lesson—when you discuss the story's action and themes—have tea and treats.

You'll need a teapot, teacups with saucers, small plates, napkins, spoons, milk & sugar (if serving black tea), a pretty plate or serving tray to put present the treats

Print this BLANK floorplan and have the students identify the various sections after they’ve looked over the version (with names) embedded in the text

Ask the students to identify the Nitris-related words in Sylvestra's speech. For reference, they are bolded below:

“… sky high to serve as your air hostess … We here at Nitris are on cloud nine to be the first estate on your tour. We’re certain you’ll be goosed to hear that you’ll be visiting both our playing field and one of our residential Fronds” … flapped her wings, and cooed … flit … We think you’ll find our estate to be a breath of fresh air … Did you know lightning is created by the djinn … They’re able to throw off energy so powerfully that it cracks open the sky and breaks the sound barrier … let’s flutter on over to the residential quarters before our volunteers start to deflate … air hockey table and zero gravity chamber. If you can, go somewhere that serves afternoon/high tea and have your discussion there, going over the the discussion points from chapters 20-23

Invite non-students to *share the pancake-house breakfast
Have a *narrator read aloud parts of the story while others re-enact
Let non-students pore over the *class offerings and choose the classes that most interest them, then explain why they made their selections
Encourage your group to *talk with as many air terms as possible throughout the day (with words related to the sky, wind, birds, etc.)

*Go on an "estate tour" of your home, using imagination to fill in the blanks. You may even want to let students grab a stuffed animal to tote in lieu of riding a winged creature

After the tsunami, take a group vote as to who would stay and who would go
